Dave’s Tips of the Week!

Rockport - Dave Hayward

From the archives: Sometimes you want to sneak up on fish early, remembering the places you spooked fish the day before. Ease up to them the next morning in “stealth mode”. Many areas can be approached under low light and light breeze this time of year. The water will typically be as cool as it is going to be in the day and you might throw hundred foot long shadows as you work down sun. Consider poling off the back deck of the skiff, instead of the platform, to lower your profile and shadows. You want to hit potholes, prop scars, and creek outflows from a distance.  I am usually fishing downwind early since I can’t see fish in the water yet so my winter leaders can  be up to 12′ long and will still turn over.  Long, fluorocarbon-tippeted leaders allow weighted flies to get down fast and “marinade” in front of chilled, laid-up fish and the extra length also keeps the heavy belly of that eight weight line away from  tense fish too. If a pothole is big, I’ll hit the front half of it first and follow up with  deeper casts back into the hole. On smaller holes, throw beyond the hole, pull the fly into the back half of it  and let the fly SINK! Death-twitch that bottom-hugging fly through and out of the hole, remember that the grass around a hole may be one or two feet shallower than the hole. I like big lead-eye and XL bead-chained seaducers for this work because I can see and “work” this fly from a long way away. Fish slow and deliberately early this time of year, or wait until 9:00 and go instantly into sight-casting mode! Best of luck these next few months on the “big girls”, fight them quickly, and let ‘em go back to finishing their Spring chores……
